A Look Back At 2019

The JBJ Soul Foundation is commited to breaking the cycle of hunger, poverty and homelessness. We are proud of what we achieved in 2019 in support of our mission. Please scroll below to view highlights from the year. Of course, we could not have achieved anything without the help of our partners, donors, volunteers, staff, patrons and so many more. Our Partnerships & Funding

HELP USA

Partnered with HELP USA to help formerly homeless DC veterans move into permanent supportive housing on the former site of Walter Reed Army Medical Center. JBJ Soul Foundation was called on to lead the private sector investment at Walter Reed and are proud to have the opportunity to say thank you to those who so bravely serve our country.

Joseph's House of Camden

Celebrated Joseph’s House of Camden’s opening of expanded facilities and the addition of day services. JBJ Soul Foundation is proud to partner with Joseph’s House to help bring critical services to those most in need in Camden.

Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth

Partnered with Sands Care to support the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth’s (NPHY) Housing Expansion Campaign to generate funds for a new facility that will provide much-needed beds for homeless youth in Las Vegas and Southern Nevada. JBJ Soul Foundation pledged support for this campaign through a matching $100,000 to inspire others to take action.

Project HOME

Partnered with Project HOME to support work to end and prevent homelessness in Philadelphia. JBJ Soul Foundation provided a $300,000 gift that was presented at Project HOME’s 30th Anniversary Gala.

HABcore

Celebrated the groundbreaking of HABcore’s 4-unit expansion project in Red Bank. This is the first time JBJ Soul Foundation has donated to permanent housing for the formerly homeless in Monmouth County. We are pleased to partner with HABCORE to provide affordable housing and supportive services to those in need, while continuing our support in the community through JBJ Soul Kitchen and JBJ & PBC Hope & Comfort Warming Center, all within walking distance of one another.

JBJ Soul Kitchen Rutgers University-Newark

Partnered with Gourmet Dining and Rutgers University-Newark to address food insecurity on the Newark campus. Like our other Soul Kitchen restaurants in Red Bank and Toms River, JBJ Soul Kitchen Rutgers-Newark will allow students and campus community members to either pay for their three-course, locally-sourced meals or volunteer to work at the restaurant if they can’t afford to pay. The restaurant will open in January 2020.

The Murphy Family Foundation

Partnered with The Murphy Family Foundation to provide free meals to furloughed federal workers at our JBJ Soul Kitchen Red Bank and Toms River locations during the government shutdown in January.

Pilgrim Baptist Church

Continued to partner with Pilgrim Baptist Church on the JBJ & PBC Hope & Comfort Warming Center to provide local homeless men in Monmouth County, NJ, a safe and secure location to stay overnight during Code Blue Nights (below freezing temperatures), in addition to providing support, information
and connection to treatment and programs in the community.

Volunteer Appreciation Party

Celebrated our amazing JBJ Soul Kitchen volunteers at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party.

Rutgers University-Newark Community Engagement Day

Dorothea and Jon Bon Jovi supporting over 300 student volunteers at Rutgers University-Newark’s 10th Biannual Community Engagement Day. Volunteers came out to clean up the area behind JBJ Soul Homes.

Summer Soul BBQ Series

Celebrated “Dog Days of Summer” as part of our Summer Soul BBQ Series, featuring delicious, all-you-can-eat BBQ at our Red Bank and Toms River locations.

 

Mulligan’s For Meals Golf Outing

Held our 3rd Annual Mulligans for Meals Golf Outing at the Colts Neck Country Club in NJ.

 

Day of Hope Walk

Gathered with local partners and service providers for the 3rd Day of Hope Walk to shine a light on the good work being done in the Red Bank community.

Friends & Family Community Fair

Held our Friends & Family Community Fair in Toms River to educate the community on the many services and resources available in the surrounding area.

Veteran's Day Brunch

Hosted brunch to honor the men and women who have given selfless service to our country.

Chili Cook-Off

Hosted our 5th Annual Chili Cook-Off in Toms River to honor and thank first responders.

Open Mic Nights

Launched Open Mic nights at our Toms River location serving up delicious food, family fun, and live music from local talent and young singers from Zzak G. Applaud Our Kids Foundation, INC.

 

Every Bowl Feeds A Soul Events

Held Every Bowl Feeds a Soul events throughout the year to raise hunger awareness in our communities. Dedicated volunteers, students and staff from local schools along with businesses and individuals from the local community, created hand-crafted ceramic bowls while partaking in an education program about food insecurity.

 

Guest Host Nights

Held Guest Host Nights throughout the year at our Toms River location. Hosts included: Actor Gaten Matarazzo of Stranger Things, Lou & Liz in the Morning from 94.3 The Point, Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Father Scott Shaffer from St. Joseph’s Church in Toms River, and Berkley Township’s Mayor Carmen Amato.

Pantry Appreciation Dinner

Gathered over 100 food pantry volunteers to thank them for all they do to help our neighbors who don’t always have access to healthy food and brainstorming gaps in service and how we can work together to better serve the community.

JBJ Soul Kitchen was named one of Edible Jersey’s 2019 Local Heroes! The restaurant was honored for our efforts and dedication to delivering a quality food experience, while also supporting New Jersey’s farmers, environmental initiatives and local community needs.  READ ARTICLE

DOROTHEA HONORED AT DRUMTHWACKET

Dorothea was honored with the Drumthwacket Prize in recognition of her efforts to improve the quality of life for the people and communities in New Jersey.
